Cliché of the day for Saturday, November 21st, 2009

A cliché is not just something that lots of people say; it's something that lots of people say and it conveys some sort of idea or message. A cliché is, in other words, a metaphor characterized by its overuse.     S. Morgan Freeman

Cliché is actually an old French word for clamp. During the early days of the printing press, commonly-used phrases were kept clamped together so that the printer did not have to waste time putting all the letters of that particular phrase into a clamp before printing could commence.
